God’s Grace Community Church was formed out of a group of believers meeting for weekly Bible study. The group met in the building located at 1106 West Tidwell Rd. That building was later converted into the first sanctuary for God’s Grace Community Church. After several prayer meetings on September 8, 2004, Rev. Isaac and Sister Vera Matthews (along with 26 members) founded God’s Grace Community Church. It was sister Vera Matthew that suggested God’s Grace as the name of the church. She remembered how God had shown his grace to Pastor Matthews during his extensive brain surgery. God miraculously healed him to a complete recovery.
The first worship service was Sunday, October 10, 2004, at 11 AM. Pastor Matthews first sermon was entitled, “Standing on God’s Word” taken from 1 Kings 8:56. There were approximately 200 worshipers in attendance supporting his calling.
Pastor Matthews was installed on January 16, 2005, by Pastor Ameal Jones at Charles R. Drew Academy with over 500 witnesses. Within six months, he had baptized (26) new converts, ordained (4) Deacons and (2) Trustees. God continued to bless the church, both spiritually and numerically. With God’s grace, Pastor Matthews started many church ministries to accommodate the needs of the members. These ministries included: Children’s Church, Brotherhood, Women’s Ministry, and Scholarship program just to name a few. By the end of the year, he ordained (3) licensed ministers, (9) deacons and (5) trustees.
In 2006, after many prayers, our pastor and church body embarked upon its first Capital Campaign to build a church.
In 2007, our church acquired 14 acres of land, located in Northwest Houston at the corner of West Gulf Bank and the 9900 block of W. Montgomery Rd.
In January 2009, Gods’ Grace entered the second capital stewart ship campaign entitled, “Let’s Build God Church”.
In June 2010, God made it possible for our church to be awarded a tax credit project to build 44 affordable apartment homes to accommodate families in the community.
On August 26, 2013, God’s Grace Community Church opened Grace Christian School and Childcare.
On October 17, 2015, God‘s Grace had its Groundbreaking Ceremony to start construction on our new sanctuary.
October 28, 2018 at 4 PM, God’s Grace Community Church had its ribbon-cutting ceremony. We were thankful for the presence of our honorable Mayor Sylvester Turner, congresswoman, Sheila Jackson-Lee along with other elected officials. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in the parking lot and we walked into our new sanctuary thanking God for his grace! The theme on that day was “Let the church be the church-Amen” taken from 2 Corinthians 1:20. Pastor Dr. LA Kessee from Bethany Baptist Church of West Los Angeles proclaimed the gospel of Jesus Christ.
God gave Pastor Matthews a vision to reach out into the community to draw people to Christ. In the past 19 years, we’ve held food drives, turkey, giveaways, clothing giveaways, and Covid vaccine shots to name a few services. The church is also a licensed, Red Cross facility.
In 2021 through the grace of God, our church purchased a generator that can accommodate 500 families in a state of emergency. God is good! In 2021 through the grace of God, our church purchased a generator that can accommodate 500 families in a state of emergency. God is good!
We are still praying, still being taught God‘s word, still learning to be better Christians, and still growing stronger in the Lord; we are eternally grateful!
The purpose for Pastor Matthews and God’s Grace Community Church is to continue winning souls to Christ, strengthening relationships with God and his people, and to be the pastor and church that makes a difference.
We are eternally grateful to God for each glorious day. Through the grace of Almighty God, we will continue the path he sets before us and in everything we do, we will give him praise and glory.
God’s Grace, this is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
“ For I know the plans I have for you,” declare the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
